So why the 'Art' of Anxiety?

Whilst you may think that your anxiety ' just happens'; becoming seriously anxious - anxious enough to have trouble coping with everyday life - is an art.

Over time you have developed and refined some impressive anxiety-making skills such as:

  • Looking for TROUBLE in most situations
  • BEATING YOURSELF UP for your human mistakes
  • PREDICTING the worst for things that haven't even happened yet
  • WORRYING what other people will think
  • Thinking you're NOT GOOD ENOUGH

It takes concerted effort, committed focus and a lot of time and attention spent on worrying and thinking about the things that make you feel anxious, for you to have anxiety!

And developing and refining something with time, attention, focus and practice is an art.

But Recovery is also an Art!
Just as you learned how to become anxious (you weren't born that way!) you can learn to move on from anxiety, too!

Recovery involves learning new emotional skills which help you to:
  • RESPOND, rather than REACT to challenges
  • Choose thoughts that SUPPORT, rather than SCARE you
  • Be your own COUNSELLOR, SUPPORTER and FRIEND
  • Use anxiety as GUIDANCE, rather than a THREAT
  • Be more RESILIENT and SELF-RELIANT

The Art of Bev

Bev Aisbett's illustrated self-help books on anxiety, depression and related issues, including the much-loved Living with IT and Taming the Black Dog have been a source of hope and support for thousands of readers in Australia and overseas for the past two decades.

As an illustrator and cartoonist, Bev created her unique cartoon format to simplify and demystify complex concepts, provide practical solutions and inject gentle humour to bring relief to those in distress.

An experienced counsellor, Bev conducts one-to-one sessions in Melbourne and via Skype

Bev is also an artist and the images you see here feature some of her artwork (her full collection of paintings can be seen on her gallery website

The Art of 'IT'

'IT' first sprang to life as a cartoon character created by Bev to depict the 'inner critic'
so common to anxiety and as a device to open 'communication' between the reader
and this voice of anxiety; thereby enabling the reader to challenge and refute some of
IT's wild claims of DOOM, GLOOM and DESPAIR

Initially seen as a 'monster' to be overcome and defeated, over time, 'IT'  has revealed
himself to be a useful ally and a part of self that needs support and reassurance,
rather than contempt.  Embracing'IT'  is an important part in the recovery process
